MP listens to paper's SOS

MP Don Foster has congratulated The Bath Chronicle on its Support Our Schools campaign.

The campaign was launched at the beginning of the academic year to lobby the Government for funding to improve secondary school buildings.

There is a real chance that Bath and North East Somerset Council could be granted up to £150m to bring its classrooms up to scratch.

This money is being made available to authorities over the next 15 years under the Government’s Building Schools for the Future initiative.

And an announcement on when the Bath area might be included in this programme is now expected in the next few weeks.

As a result the Chronicle is working to ensure the SOS campaign is made known in Westminster.

A dossier has been put together containing all the articles written on the subject together with a letter addressed to Secretary of State for Education, Charles Clarke.

This has now been handed to Bath MP Don Foster and a similar presentation is being made to Wansdyke MP Dan Norris.

Don said: “I Congratulate the Chronicle for its campaign which has gained so much support from local residents and local schools. The request to the Government is a modest one.

“We are merely asking them to give us our fair share of the money which they have announced is to be made available across the country.

“The SOS campaign has shown there is an urgent need to improve the quality of some of our school buildings.

“Having quality school buildings like having quality offices improves the quality of work as well as making it a more pleasant place to be.

“I will work with Mr Norris to find the most effective way of drawing the campaign to the attention of the Secretary of State for Education and relevant ministers.”

The Chronicle also plans to continue to keep the pressure on with further articles and visits to schools highlighting the need.
