Money give-away will help cathedral

The Coventry Evening Telegraph and the city’s cathedral have teamed up to stop a repeat of the fire that nearly destroyed it two years ago.

The dramatic blaze that engulfed the modern cathedral highlighted the need for better safety. So far, most of the building work has been finished, but the most important – vents above the tapestry, and fire detectors – have yet to be added.

The cathedral has launched an appeal for £50,000 – by giving away £10,000.

The paper is appealing for 100 teams of people to come forward to receive £100 each and raise more than they were given. Teams are encouraged to be imaginative.

“There really are no rules. Any organisation which has a plan which is both moral and legal are eligible,” said Michael Morgan, development director at the cathedral.
