Milestones reached thanks to Gazette

Two fund-raising appeals in Somerset have reached key milestones thanks to the County Gazette.

The newspaper has been backing the NCH’s Supporting Somerset’s Youth appeal throughout the past year and it has now hit its £200,000 target.

Money raised will be used to help under-privileged youngsters reach their full potential, and among projects to receive cash from the initiative will be family units in Halcon and Taunton.

Meanwhile, the County Gazette’s Stop It Before It Starts drugs awareness campaign has reached £100,000 – thanks to a £5,000 donation to the project from the Gannett Foundation, a charity-wing of the paper’s parent company.

  • David Baker, chairman of Somerset Life Education Centres; Tamsin Jones,County Gazette news editor, and Ken Bird, editor-in-chief of Newsquest Somerset, celebrate the Stop it! fund-raising success
  • The money raised will be used to fund an ambitious Life Education Centres mobile classroom project for Somerset.

Once the scheme is up and running it will help 16,000 youngsters at schools in an area covering Taunton, Wellington, Wiveliscombe, Minehead and Bridgwater.

A specially equipped mobile classroom, staffed by a trained educator, will visit primary schools to provide tailor-made lessons on health, drugs and alcohol to suit the age of youngsters and their learning abilities.
