"Keep Keith" – says the Echo

The Lincolnshire Echo has revealed that Lincoln City manager Keith Alexander looks set to quit the team for Peterborough.

And it’s started up a “Keep Keith” campaign to try to persuade the long-serving Imps man to stay.

The rallying cry from the Echo said: “It is difficult to think of a more gut-wrenching scenario for any true Lincoln City fan. The hugely popular team boss is about to be made a tempting offer by Second Division Peterborough United.

“In the last 19 months Alexander has worked miracles for Lincoln – all on a shoestring.

“Everyone remembers the smiles on the faces of the 15,000 Imps fans who went to the Millennium Stadium in May. Now is the time for the club to dig deep and find a way of matching any offer from Peterborough.

“Keith Alexander has always said he loves Lincoln. Let’s make sure he doesn’t break our hearts.”

The Echo is calling on the Sincil Bank club to dig deep into its coffers to match whatever wages Peterborough will offer.

Alexander’s £35,000 is understood to be already £40,000 less than his predecessor and money is in short supply.

But the paper says no stone should be unturned in the club’s fight to keep the boss.

Sources at the club have told the Echo that Alexander is unhappy with his pay packet.

And if he negotiates terms with Peterborough owner Barry Fry, who is thought be keen on a boardroom position at London Road having completed his takeover of the club last month, Alexander is likely to be unveiled as the new Posh boss early this week.

  • Keith Alexander led a side which finished third from bottom in 2001-02 to the dizzy heights of the play-off final in his first season back in charge. Coupled with success on the pitch, Alexander’s eye for a bargain is unquestionable.
