Justice for Zoe petition presented to Home Secretary

The Wiltshire TimesJustice For Zoe petition has been presented to Home Secretary David Blunkett by Westbury MP Dr Andrew Murrison in the House Of Commons.

The newspaper campaign was launched in April in a bid to get a minimum jail tariff set for soldier Miles Evans, the stepfather who murdered nine-year-old Zoe Evans in 1997.

Wiltshire Times editor Toby Granville, said: “We launched the petition on behalf of Zoe’s family who have had an agonising wait trying to get some kind of closure by knowing a minimum sentence that her killer will be expected to serve behind bars.

“The family have been in a state of limbo, and on the fifth anniversary of her death, we decided to help them reach an end to their agony so they can move on. It’s truly a cause worth campaigning for, not just for this family but for many others in the same situation.

“We had a great response from readers with close to 1,000 signatures despite it happening quite a long time ago but it was a case that had reached into the heart of the community and had not been forgotten.

Our local MP Andrew Murrison gave us strong support, and served David Blunkett with the completed petition hoping that he will review the case, and we have pledged to the family that we will not give up this fight for justice for Zoe.”
