The Wells Journal has launched a campaign to bring a new traffic strategy to the Somerset cathedral city.
The paper said that county councillors frequently promised action to ease traffic problems but nothing ever seemed to be done.
In a front page article backing city councillors the paper outlined contentious areas and suggested proposals for discussion and action.
It outlined nine problems seen as important by local people – and highlighted where there was no apparent progress.
The Journal has sent a copy of the paper to Somerset County Council, its highways contractors and the local county councillor and is awaiting their response.
The paper said: “The Wells Journal is backing a call by city councillors for a comprehensive traffic plan for the city.
“The Journal believes Wells needs an overall and carefully thought out long-term traffic management plan instead of the city muddling on with piecemeal decisions and changes.
“We believe Wells’ traffic system is confused, time-wasting and illogical, while many long-term road safety and parking problems remain unsolved.”
