Historic name under threat

The Edinburgh Evening News has launched an appeal to prevent the name of Leith being removed from the electoral map of Scotland.

Plans to redraw constituency boundaries could see the name of Leith replaced with Edinburgh North East.

The paper explained how thousands of Leithers were proud of their name, which dates back to medieval times. It criticised the plans drawn up by the Boundary Commission, a panel of academics and a High Court judge.

Mark Lazarowicz, Labour MP for the current Edinburgh North and Leith said he was behind the campaign to keep the name.

He said: “Whatever the eventual boundaries adopted, the name of Leith should not be allowed to disappear from the electoral map of Scotland.”

The campaign also received political backing from Tory Councillor Allan Jackson who said: “People won’t take this lying down. We will lobby at every possible opportunity to get the name restored.”
