Heart hope after cash pledge

The fight to tackle heart disease has been boosted by readers of the Bradford T&A.

They have agreed to pledge more than £128,000 towards research into the disease.

The staggering sum is the result of the Your own Free Will campaign, jointly run by the paper, local solicitors and the National Heart Research Fund.

Hundreds of Telegraph and Argus readers signed up to the scheme, which offered a free will-making service in return for leaving a legacy to the National Heart Research Fund.

More than 200 wills were made promising £128,000 towards research into heart disease.

Legacy officer Ian Ackroyd said the charity was indebted to the T&A and its readers.

He said: “Firstly, it gives us extra comfort and security knowing that this sort of sum will be available for heart research in future years.

“Secondly, it is a sad fact that seven out of ten people in this country die without making a will, thus placing a burden on their loved ones. Hopefully the campaign has persuaded many of these people to make a will ensuring that their wishes are complied with.”
