Guns amnesty gets results

More than 40 dangerous air weapons have been taken off the streets of South Tyneside in an operation prompted by the Shields Gazette’s Hand Them In campaign.

Police are so pleased with the success of the guns amnesty that it is allowing another week for people to give up their guns.

Weapons ranging from high powered rifles to “gat guns” have so far been handed over for destruction.

Police Inspector Phil Kay said: “We are so pleased with the success of the campaign that we want to give people in South Tyneside a further opportunity to contribute to the safety of their community.”
