Going up, going up

Falkirk are at the top of the Scottish First Division – and look a good bet to achieve promotion.

But the team may be barred from the top flight by the Scottish Premier League because their stadium fails to meet the required standard.

So the Falkirk Herald has stepped in to organise a petition to boost the team’s chances of playing in the Premier League next season.

The Herald has printed a petition which it has urged readers to complete and send to the SPL.

And the campaign has been backed by local MSP Dennis Canavan who said: “I support the terms of the Herald’s appeal to SPL.”

Local Provost Dennis Goldie also gave his support.

He said: “The SPL will be scoring a real own goal if it doesn’t treat the club fairly and I’d urge everyone in Falkirk to sign the Herald’s campaign.”

A new stadium is in the planning stage but progress remains very slow.

A Falkirk fans group is now planning to enter a Falkirk FC by-election candidate to put pressure on the Labour council to build the new ground.
