Gazette joins UNICEF to repeat bid for aid

The Basingstoke Gazette has joined forces with the international charity UNICEF to raise money for children affected by war in Iraq.

The collaboration comes two years after a similar appeal raised £2,700 to help the thousands of people left injured and homeless by the devastating earthquake in Gujarat, India.

In its launch article, the paper told how suffering in Iraq was not simply a result of the current conflict as the Iraqi people have endured more than ten years of hardship from two wars and economic sanctions.

The country now has one of the world’s worst child mortality rates – one in eight children die before their fifth birthday.

The paper also told the story of little Hussein Ayad, who has become stunted because of malnutrition. His mother receives monthly food rations but they contain no meat or eggs – things she cannot afford to buy.

The appeal funds will help UNICEF deliver vital medical supplies to hospitals and health clinics across the country where children are suffering the impact of the war. They will also ensure access to safe water, food, education and psychological support.
