Front page photos set to target suspects

The Grimsby Telegraph has teamed up with the local police to crack down on shop crime.

The paper has carried a front page story to launch the initiative, which sees suspects’ pictures taken from closed circuit TV footage and printed in its pages.

Community Crimewatch began with the publication of footage of the first four suspects, and more will follow as shop owners and store managers embrace the scheme.

As the Christmas rush to the shops increases rapidly, the use of closed circuit television in tracking down offenders is being stepped up to deter those tempted to steal and catch those who do.

It is not just shoplifters. Those committing deception charges – using stolen debit or credit cards and presenting rogue benefit books – are also being targeted.

Readers are now being urged to call police with names of those featured in the footage, while traders have been asked to ensure their security equipment is operating as well as it can be to maximise the success of the scheme.

Grimsby Telegraph editor Michelle Lalor is pleased to be part of Community Crimewatch.

She said: “We welcome any partnership which makes the streets of North East Lincolnshire safer.”

And Superintendent Stuart Donald said: “This is an excellent way the police can work directly with the Grimsby Telegraph and the public of North East Lincolnshire to tackle retail crime.”
