FRED success

A new appeal has raised enough cash to buy a heart defibrillator after just two weeks.

The Western Morning News campaign has scored an early success by raising £4,400 for the FRED – First Response Emergency Defibrillator – appeal.

They will be put on board one of 15 new rapid response vehicles for the Westcountry Ambulance service.

That means they will be first to the scene and administer treatment straight away when cutting vital minutes of journey time could save a life.

The rapid response vehicles do not carry stretchers and can only transport the walking wounded.

Ambulance service spokesman Darren Gibson told the WMN: “Their primary task is to attend very quickly to incidents of heart attacks, asthma attacks or collapses, where an instant response is needed.”

The appeal will continue as it aims to meet a target of five new defibrillators. It is also hoping to benefit from the Inland Revenue Gift Aid Scheme where each donation can attract an extra 28 per cent tax rebate if the name and address of the donor is supplied.
