Flying start as target reached in days

A campaign from the Grimsby Evening Telegraph to fit every home in the area with a smoke alarm has got off to a flying start.

Every £5 raised goes to the local fire brigade to buy one 10-year smoke alarm, which firefighters then fit free of charge in homes across North East Lincolnshire.

The paper’s target is to buy 1,000 alarms – and this was almost reached only two days after the launch.

Seven major companies in the area have pledged their support, including Youngs Bluecrest and Novartis Grimsby, which have each said that they will buy 100 alarms, taking the total up to 750.

The campaign started after the deaths of Ian Smith and his seven-year-old daughter Holly, who died in a house fire on Boxing Day.

Telegraph editor Michelle Lalor said: “This has been a fantastic start to what is obviously a very worthwhile campaign.

“I would like to thank all the companies that have responded so far and encourage others to join in – we are asking for just £5 to save a life.”
