Evening News campaign helps banish kerb crawlers

Kerb crawlers are being banished from city streets and a name and shame campaign launched by the Manchester Evening News is being given the credit.

Police have revealed that areas once rife with street prostitution have now become virtual no-go zones for kerb crawling customers.

Since the campaign began 66 kerb crawlers have been dealt with by the courts.

They have also been named and shamed in the Evening News. It seems that fewer are taking the risk for fear of getting caught and facing the embarrassment of appearing in the paper.

The name and shame campaign was launched after shoppers and businesses raised concerns about the number of prostitutes being openly picked up on busy streets.

Insp Mike Schofield said: ”The co-operation with the Evening News and the courts has been extremely useful and we’re delighted the way things have worked out.”
