EP's 20ft poster takes to the road

The Bristol Evening Post’s Save Our Streets campaign has taken to the road – in a big way, with shoppers in the city being warned about the risks of street crime on a giant 20ft by 10ft colour poster.

The message will be driven around the Broadmead shopping centre on a poster van and is costing the Evening Post £1,600 as part of a joint initiative with the police.

The image depicts a pavement made up of faces of people in Bristol who have all been robbery victims.

Next to it are the words: “Save Our Streets. Don’t Become Another Victim Of Street Crime.”

Inspector Catherine Tarrant, of the Operation Lynx robbery team, said: “By working with the Evening Post on the poster van idea we are able to share the cost and reach more shoppers for longer.

“It’s important to stress that the chances of being a victim of street crime while out Christmas shopping are low but these mobile posters should make the chances even lower.”

Save Our Streets was launched in September by the Evening Post in a bid to help reclaim the city from the muggers.

Post deputy editor Stan Szecowka said: “£1,600 is a lot of money to spend on this aspect of the campaign but if it helps reduce the number of muggings in Bristol over Christmas it will be well worth it.”

A website set up as part of the campaign has clocked up it’s 1,000th user.

The milestone was achieved yesterday and comes just two months after the website was launched.

Anyone logging onto the page can access a “name and shame” section for people convicted as part of the street crime crackdown, a daily robbery update and an exclusive interview with a convicted mugger.

Editor Mike Lowe said he was delighted at the response to the website.

Save Our Streets was launched in September in a bid to turn the tide in the fight against street crime, ” he said.

“By working with the police the robbery rate has dropped significantly.”
