The last hope of saving a Somerset town’s main post office has been handed in to the Prime Minister by the editor of the local newspaper.

Joanna Roughton, editor of the Somerset Standard, delivered a 700-name petition to Downing Street in a bid to save Frome Post Office.

She was accompanied by the local MP David Heath.

The signatures have been collected over the past two months since Post Office Ltd announced plans to close the town centre office.

The joint campaign also had the backing of other local political parties, local authorities and unions representing the post office’s employees.

In a letter delivered with the petition, she said: “This plan has aroused strong opposition from the people of Frome who feel it is another nail in the coffin for their town centre.

“They also feel the argument put forward by Post Office Ltd, that it is not commercially viable, does not hold water and that efforts could be made to improve its profitability.”
