Editor's wet and windy evenings set to pay off

The editor of a Scottish weekly is to run the Edinburgh Marathon in June to raise money towards building a new cancer care centre.

East Fife Mail editor Graeme Scott says the challenge will be well worth it – and he’s planning to add to the £200,000-plus that Fifers have already raised for the newspaper’s Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre appeal.

He said: “Running 26-and-a-bit miles is perhaps not everyone’s idea of fun, but I decided it would be worth the effort.

“Rather than attempting to train completely on my own, I reckoned it would be preferable to run with a group, so I am now pounding the streets in the company of Fife Athletics Club.

“I am gradually building up my training runs towards the big day on June 15, and while it is hard work, I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying it.

“There have been nights when it has been wet and windy outside, and there’s football on TV, but the knowledge that I am raising money for such a worthwhile cause is a great incentive.”

The generosity of readers has seen the Mail’s targets smashed well ahead of schedule – and support for the latest fund-raising venture means that Graeme is well on the way to his £500 sponsorship target already.
