Editor puts her shirt on result

There’s another chance for people to show their pride in part ofEdinburgh – as the Evening News launches a Keep Leith campaignt-shirt.

The idea is to give the city’s historic port area a boost at a time whenits very name could be under threat in forthcoming parliamentary boundarychanges.

Campaigners are planning to wear the shirts at protest meetings and backthe name when they’re shopping, working, playing sport or relaxing at home.

They were first given to high-profile members of the campaign by theEvening News but public demand resulted in more being printed to stress theimportant of Leith’s local identity.

Acting editor Denise Brockton said: “I hope people wear them with pride and that this helps our campaign to keep the name of Leith alive.”

The local Member of the Scottish Parliament, Malcolm Chisholm, hasalready been through one battle to save the name – in the 1990s.

He said: “There is absolutely no reason why the name should be dropped -I can’t believe they are trying to do it again.”

Fisherman are preparing to put campaign banners on their boats and themovement also has support from celebrities The Proclaimers, Sir Tom farmer,of Kwik-Fit, ex-Hibs captain Yogi Hughes and former TV weather man – now anMSP – Lloyd Quinnan.
