Echo leads county quest

The Lincolnshire Echo is hailing the latest success in its campaign to secure a new museum for Lincoln and Lincolnshire.

A total of around £5m is set to be released by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which means the £11m project is a crucial step closer.

The local newspaper has been an important factor in getting all the interested parties together to bring the project to fruition.

City and County Museum Action Group chairman Pearl Wheatley said: “The Echo ran quite a campaign which really focused the minds of councillors, interested parties and the general public and got everyone fired up.

“Together we’ve achieved a great thing for the city and county.”

The city and county’s local authorities were brought together in a campaign spearheaded by the Echo as public pressure grew for the museum.

The problem was that the county had many artefacts and treasures scattered across a wide area – and nowhere to display them after the old museum closed in 1993.

Until the campaign features began in the Echo it was rare to see the two political sides work together but their co-operation is now seen as one of the main successes behind the cash bid.

There was still controversy through, as arguments about a possible location raged on.

In November 1999 a museum action group was formed and the Echo has carried a series of articles on each twist and turn of the project.
