Dump campaign grows

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council has launched a campaign against the construction of a giant incinerator – following similar efforts by the Surrey Mirror.

The newspaper ran a Don’t Dump it Here campaign after a local firm announced plans to build the huge facility at its Redhill plant.

Now the borough council is spending £10,000 urging residents to write to the county council – which has the final say in this instance – voicing opposition to the plan.

Residents have until December 22 to make their feelings known and then the county council will make a decision on whether to grant permission.

The Mirror pointed out that those who had already written to the county council before the formal planning application was made should write again – because their first letters will not count.

Michael Buttery, chairman of the borough council’s environmental services committee, said: “Some 18,000 households in the borough will be affected by this. We don’t see why we should become the dumping ground for the rest of the borough.

“There are alternatives, that’s the point. Maybe there’s a better place and one which is not using green belt land.”
