'Dole capital' targets change

The Torquay Herald Express has launched a major campaign aimed at putting South Devon back on the business map.

The Westcountry newspaper has teamed up with Enterprise South Devon with their Let’s Do Business initiative to advise aspiring entrepreneurs on all they need to start up a small firm.

It comes after thousands of jobs have been lost locally, leading to Torbay being dubbed the “dole capital of the West country”.

Small firms are a vital part to South Devon’s economy, with 97 per cent of firms having less than 50 people, and the Express and Enterprise Agencies want numbers to grow still further.

The campaign has been welcomed by local business leaders keen to see the demise of adverse economical conditions in the area.

South Devon Chamber of Trade president Gordon Oliver said: “It is a brilliant idea. Small businesses are the backbone of the business community.”
