Dame Judi backs Press campaign to save Odeon

The York Evening Press campaign to save the Odeon cinema has received backing from the highest level.

Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench, who was born in York, has lent her support to the campaign.

The petition to save the city picture palace has now reached 13,000 names, less than two months after it was launched.

The Evening Press launched its campaign to save the cinema when the owners of the Art Deco building said it was no longer viable. It is the only traditional cinema left within York’s city walls.

Dame Judi said she had been a regular visitor to the cinema when she lived in the city, and told campaign organisers: “I have very happy memories of it and would be devastated to see it closed.

“I am delighted to add my support to your campaign to save the Odeon – it is the most beautiful Art Deco building.”

The campaign has received all-party support in the House of Commons.

The petition, calling for the cinema to stay open after a sensitive refurbishment, has also won backing from council, business, tourism and conservation leaders.
