Council to act on paper's speed plea

A county council has agreed to discuss imposing 20mph speed limits outside schools as a result of a campaign in the local newspaper.

The Lincolnshire Echo’s Slow Down initiative began last month to cut drivers’ speeds outside schools and raise awareness of other road safety issues.

And now the issue is on Lincolnshire County Council’s agenda for a meeting early next year.

Coun Richard Coupland said: “It is great news for campaigners and I am glad the council is showing concern for children’s safety.

“The Echo’s campaign has been very good and given the issue much-needed attention.”

Lincoln school head teacher Hazel Belcher said: “Only yesterday we witnessed a car travelling far too fast down Calder Road and the driver beeped at children to get them to move. That is unacceptable.

“We support the Echo’s campaign and hope it continues to bring action.”
