Clubs rush to sign Telegraph code

More than 150 amateur football clubs have backed a new Code of Conduct drawn up by the Grimsby Telegraph.

The newspaper has been spearheading a campaign to rid football of swearing, violence and threatening behaviour, which it says is on increase and causing referees and players to quit the game.

And after questioning each of the 250 amateur clubs in the area, it has put together a six-point code which it is now asking them all to sign.

Among the points in the code is that:

  • referees should be given a courteous welcome, and farewell, irrespective of their performance;
  • managers ensure their team is briefed about their conduct before each game; and
  • club managers and officials do their best to ensure supporters behave in a correct manner.

    It also asks that players and club officials appreciate their opponents’ right to enjoy the game, accept defeat with the same dignity as victory, and that managers and club officials make it clear that cheating, in any form, is unacceptable.

    Since drawing up the code two weeks ago, 150 clubs have signed up and soccer writer Stuart Rowson has said that he is hopeful of a 100 per cent take up before the June 6 deadline.

    The Telegraph will then print the names of the amateur sides who have agreed to help clean up football, and any who haven’t.

    The code has also been ratified by FIFA and every club that signs up to the scheme will receive a framed certificate.
