Chronicle push to beat the bogus callers

The Essex Chronicle has joined forces with the Chelmsford police to launch a campaign to stop bogus callers preying on the elderly and vulnerable.

The month-long campaign will include articles in the Chronicle highlighting how victims of bogus callers are affected and what can be done to prevent it happening.

Det Insp Ewan Wilson from Chelmsford CID said: “We have had a spate of artifice burglaries in the past two months.

“In Chelmsford town alone we have had about eight, but in the whole of the division there are quite a few more. The figure could be double, or even triple, last year’s so far.”

With a number of recent arrests, Det Insp Wilson is confident that the campaign will help secure more convictions, and more importantly help people become more aware of bogus callers preventing them too becoming targets.

He said: “This campaign could not have come at a better time. The summertime is when these people come out of the woodwork. We want to thank the Essex Chronicle for helping us make the vulnerable and their families more aware of this despicable type of crime.”
