Campaign letters get Westminster outing

Transport Secretary Stephen Byers has first-hand knowledge of a controversial rail link between Plymouth and London – now that letters backing an Evening Herald campaign have been handed to him.

The letters were from business, tourism, politics and community leaders who back the campaign for a three-hour rail link. They were delivered with a covering letter from Herald editor Alan Qualtrough.

The Better Rail Advisory Group delivered the letters in a private meeting with the minister.

The Group’s co-founder Paul Gentleman said after the meeting: “The letters sum up how people feel across the country in terms of lack of investment and communication.

“Mr Byers took them and said that he understood why people were frustrated. He was aware of the campaign that the Herald was running.”

He added that although Mr Byers had not said that there would be any immediate action, the direct approach taken by the Herald would prompt a formal response.
