Building bridges in Aberdeen

More than 2,000 Aberdeen Evening Express readers have called the paper to support its campaign to reopen Grandholm Bridge and beat the city’s gridlock.

The Evening Express is calling for the temporary re-opening of the bridge – an important through-route – until major road improvements such as a bypass for Aberdeen are in place to alleviate traffic problems.

Around 1,500 angry commuters have rung a telephone voteline demanding that the barriers be raised, while another 700 have joined the fight by visiting the newspaper’s website, www.thisisnorthscotland.co.uk.

Just 40 people have said the bridge should stay shut.

Phone and Internet votes are being counted ahead of a public showdown between commuters and city council bosses at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Thursday.

Drivers who have suffered jams since the Grandholm Bridge was closed will grill city council leader Len Ironside and roads chief Hugh Murdoch.

The public meeting is expected to be one of the biggest ever seen in Aberdeen.
