Bid to end yob culture

A campaign to rid Huddersfield of hooligans, vandals and graffiti artists has been launched by the Daily Examiner.

The paper has linked up with police to Stop The Yobs and it is hoped the campaign will have an immediate effect as one of the busiest nights of the year for police – Bonfire Night – approaches.

Last year West Yorkshire Police faced 251 firework incidents – ranging from bangers thrown into telephone kiosks to a firework attack which almost blinded a Huddersfield woman.

As part of the campaign the paper has pledged to publish photographs of ‘yobs’ in a rogues gallery and print details of any punishments if they go before the courts.

A special telephone hotline is also being set up and advice will be given to help people plagued by hooligans.

Extra police will also patrol the streets.

Examiner editor Roy Wright said: “Hooligan behaviour is not high spirits. It is a menace that affects almost everyone.

“Too many people rely on the police to handle everything. We cannot expect them to solve every problem.

“We are appealing to every reader to be the eyes and ears of the police and to come forward with details of bad behaviour.

“That is the way to end yob culture.”
