Bexhill will not be forgotten!

A decision to reject calls for a bypass for Bexhill-on-Sea has been branded a “massive blow” by the Observer.

The weekly paper has now struck up its own campaign for improvements to roads in the area with a plea for highways and transport chiefs not to forget the town’s needs.

In an editorial column decrying the Government’s decision to reject a new bypass, editor Michael Beard admitted there were holes in the pro-argument.

But he said: “The overriding factor was that the town’s best – and some would say only – hope for improved transport and more jobs, rested with the building of the new road.”

He said that it was not the time for local people to sit quietly and lick their wounds in defeat – but time to encourage the Government to use a large chunk of what would have been bypass money to invest in Bexhill.

The paper has launched a Don’t Forget Bexhill campaign and wants every resident to add their name top a petition to send to Transport Secretary Stephen Byers.

Mr Beard said: “This campaign will not only demonstrate the depth of feeling in the town but also act as a warning to Mr Byers that he cannot turn his back on Bexhill because we will all be watching him.”
