Battle to save Jackie Charlton's old club

Generous readers of the Wharfedale Observer are helping to save the sports club where Jack Charlton used to coach during England’s 1966 World Cup triumph.

The Weston Lane Sports and Social Club in Otley was devastated by an arson attack in November.

Thousands of pounds worth of sports equipment was lost and the clubhouse was completely gutted.

So, through the Wharfedale Observer, the club launched the ‘Walk On’ appeal to secure its own future.

And in just three weeks, £600 has been donated to the fund.

Former England and Leeds United skipper Jack Charlton took training sessions at the club throughout the sixties and was the club’s coach when England won the World Cup.

The club has attempted to contact him to ask for his help but have so far received no reply.

Now that the appeal is up and running, the club is hoping to build a new clubhouse.

Chairman Chris Lawson said: “I’m very pleased at the response so far and we have a number of fundraising events with the kids planned for the New Year.”
