Age no barrier to the Post

Age discrimination could be pushed off the agenda if a new campaign from the Nottingham Evening Post gets its way.

The paper wants to call a halt to the problem in a bid to help unemployed over-50s and teenagers find a job.

The Post has launched the Age Positive Regional Newspaper Award with Department of Work and Pensions for businesses and individuals to show how they have beaten ageism.

The two awards comprise one for employers who can show their positive attitude towards age diversity in recruitment, training or development; the other is for an individual who has overcome age discrimination in getting a job or in making a career change.

And in a pioneering move it is also inviting people over 50 or under 20 to send in their CVs, to be published free to help them get back into work. There will also be expert advice on skills like writing a CV and interview technique.

The paper also plans to follow the trials and tribulations of some of its featured job-hunters.

The two award-winners will be invited to attend a prize-giving lunch in the Long Gallery at Lancaster House, London, on November 15, attended by Government ministers, where an Outstanding Achievement Award winner will be picked.

Company winners will receive an Age Positive logo which they can use on their company literature for a year, an invitation to become an Employer Champion and an Internet ‘hotlink’ to the new Age Positive website.
