Call to celebrate local newspaper industry

Newspapers around the country have received the rallying cry to work on creative ideas to promote Local Newspaper Week.

The Newspaper Society has put together a press pack containing eight press releases as well as artwork and other resources to help make the event, which runs from May 14 to 20, a success.

David Newell, director of The Newspaper Society, said: “There was a tremendous response and enthusiasm for Local Newspaper Week throughout the country last year with thousands of articles, features, double-page spreads, supplements and competitions run in regional and local newspapers.

“This clearly demonstrates the unique community role of Britain’s regional press. I hope we can continue this success for the fourth year of Local Newspaper Week.”

The week provides a unique opportunity for the thousands of people in the industry to celebrate its strengths and successes.

It also affects those who work alongside the world of the regional press, such as newsagents, councils, schools, businesses and local community groups.

Articles last year included items on regional press facts, press freedom and articles on successful campaigns. Some papers ran competitions and local history events or ran articles on community work for the Prince’s Trust Local Reporting Award.
