BT/Society of Editors Newcomer of the Year

Entrants were competing for the Rhian Evans Award, named in memory of a previous award winner who was killed in a car crash.

Winner: Bryn Jones, Daily Post.

Judges said his original work was “handled with aplomb” and “his maturity as a journalist was demonstrated movingly and worryingly in his exposition of a young girl’s daily terror at close quarters with her sexual abuser. This was journalism of a high standard”.

Highly commended: Toby Mason (Western Mail) and Mererid Wigley (BBC Wales.)
