Bob Satchwell on skills and recruitment

Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors, said many regional newspaper groups were now looking closely at the issue of staff turnover.

“The regional media has got to be able to continue to recruit talented young people and retain them when it is competing for these people with the dot.com companies, PR, national papers and broadcasting.

“People with the skills that regional newspapers need are in high demand from other parts of the media – and these things are not simple: there’s always the idea that the grass is greener.

“As a society we are about to survey our members to find out about problems with training and retention of staff. Pay might come into that – but it’s by no means the only issue. There’s often the feeling from reporters that the grass is always greener…”
