Blessing for newspaper headquarters

The patron saint of journalists St Francis of Sales was called upon to help with a blessing of Archant London’s new headquarters.

Father Jeffrey Woolnough, a priest from a church in Ilford neighbouring the office, known as Media House, approached Ilford Recorder editor Chris Carter with the suggestion of a blessing as a way of signifying the regeneration the new building has brought to the area.

The ceremony began in the reception area with readings and a prayer, before Father Woolnough and parish priest Father Jonathan Kester sprinkled holy water throughout the building.

Leaders from many of the other faiths represented in Redbridge also attended.

Editor Chris said: “I must admit I was a little taken aback when it was suggested and we asked all staff for their views to ensure no one objected.

“But I am delighted the fathers thought of us and believe it is indicative of the standing the paper has in the community. It also illustrates how vital the new building is to the well-being of the area.

“One faith leader invited commented that it was apt for the Recorder to host such a gathering as he felt we were at the centre of the community.”
