Auction for flood victims

One of the first regional papers to start a fund for victims of the floods that are gripping the nation was the Brighton Evening Argus.

The paper last week produced a Sussex floods special, after the worst floods in living memory devastated Lewes and Uckfield more than two weeks ago. The areas have now been hit again and more heavy rain is forecast for the weekend in the south east.

Now, the Argus is asking businesses to donate a prize or a service worth at least £150 to help people rebuild their lives. Homes and businesses already destroyed are set for further problems and the appeal is seen as only the start of the rebuilding process.

The idea is that readers will be able to call a special phone hotline and bid, raising money for the flood fund.

The Argus is to publish an Appeal Auction supplement with details of all the donations, the companies making the pledges, a price guide and instructions on how to bid.
