Appeal marches on

Walkers doing their bit for charity have upped a Millennium appeal by £1,700.

Around 100 people raised a total of £6,000 on the Workington to Keswick millennium charity walk 2000, with some of that going to the West Cumberland Times and Star/Whitehaven News appeal.

The sister papers want to donate £40,000 to five deserving charities across West Cumbria.

Their appeal aims to raise:

  • £5,000 for the North Cumbria Children’s Community Team which cares for children with chronic illness in their own homes;
  • £5,000 towards the Pre-School Vision Screening Initiative run by the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, to screen pre-school children for lazy eye and squint;
  • £3,000 for Signpost, a support helpline for young drug users and their families launched by the Ryan Smith Rising Sun Trust;
  • £21,000 to build a physiotherapy room at the Hensingham Centre in Whitehaven for people with learning and physical disabilities;
  • £6,000 for the Copeland Occupational and Social Centre in Cleator Moor for people across Copeland and Allerdale with physical disabilities.

The walking event was held in March but the proceeds have only just been totted up.

Readers are being urged to help the Times & Star and The Whitehaven News and raise money for the appeal either by organising a fund-raising event or by making a donation.
