Andy's run of bad luck continues

After experiencing yet another bout of bad luck, the Burton Mail’s Andy Tilley is proclaiming himself to be the unluckiest reporter in the regional press.

Having been beaten up in an unprovoked late night street attack earlier this year, a recent press trip to Fort William took an unexpected turn when a drunk driver rammed his car.

Andy, deputy sports editor at the Mail, had decided to spend an extra week in Scotland at the end of his three-day press trip which ended on the Monday morning.

However, when travelling out of Fort William that afternoon, on a fast flowing main road, he was suddenly confronted with a car travelling on the wrong side of the road coming straight towards him.

Andy said: “All I could do was stop and close my eyes.

“The car swerved narrowly avoiding a head-on collision, hit me and forced a Vauxhall Vectra off the road before crashing into a garden and into a ditch. The fire brigade had to cut the driver out.

“He was an elderly gentlemen, who turned out to be a drunk driver.”

Although Andy was unhurt, his car was badly damaged and he had to cut his holiday short and return home.

He said: “My holiday was in tatters. It was the latest in a long line of mishaps – my car was broken into in November while I was covering a football match, and then I was mugged earlier this year.

“I must surely be the unluckiest reporter in the regional press.”
