Ahoy there, me hearties! Reporters walk the plank

Shiver me timbers – some reporters will do anything for charity!

Gareth Arnold, Danny Chandler and Glenn Pearson of the East Kent Gazette Group donned their best pirate costumes to walk the plank at the Sheppey Island Pirates festival.

Known as the Gazetteer Buccaneers, the three threw themselves into murky waters to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Danny said: “We were judged on three things – our use of piratical terminology, our execution of the jump and our star quality.

“Gareth did a forward flip off the plank and then Glenn and I followed doing the conga! We were trying to be imaginative!

“The crowd seemed to have a great time and it was good to get out and meet people on your patch in a way you wouldn’t normally be able to.”

The Gazetteer Buccaneers finished fifth in the event which attracted 22 would-be pirates, each of whom paid £5 to walk the plank.

• The East Kent Gazette Group is owned by Trinity Mirror and comprised of the East Kent Gazette, the Sheppey Gazette and the Faversham Times.
