The Plymouth-based Western Morning News won the coveted Daily Newspaper of the Year category for the first time after being a runner up three times in the previous four years. Editor Barrie Williams is pictured above receiving the award from BT’s Peter Kinsella.
Last year’s winner the Evening Post, Bristol, shared the runners-up spot with its sister paper the Western Daily Press, itself a three times previous winner of this category.
Judges praised the Morning News for “being superbly written, full of conviction and providing a Stentorian voice for the West Country. The depth and range of its reporting and its zeal in ensuring campaigns are successfully concluded are hugely impressive.
“Everywhere you look in the paper there are things worth reading produced by writers of real authority. The design is clean and intelligent with an impressive number of landscape photographs. All in all, a top quality package,” they said.
