Press Club gets set for New York-style media awards

The Birmingham Press Club has made a last call for entries for its fifth annual Midlands Media Awards.

Organisers are urging journalists from across the region to put their best work forward – and are promising a unique New York-themed awards ceremony for those who make the shortlist.

The awards recognise the achievements of the media industry in the region, with 13 categories in total including newspaper of the year, scoop of the year, headline of the year, news reporter of the year (daily), news reporter of the year (weekly), and newcomer of the year.

There are also categories for business journalist of the year, feature writer of the year, news photographer of the year, sports photographer of the year and sports journalist of the year as well as the Trevor Roberts award for upcoming photographers.

There is no time to waste as the entry deadline is September 28.

  • John Lamb (left), chairman of Birmingham Press Club, launching the awards at Baskerville House with Mike Dalton from sponsors Royal Mail
  • The awards presentation, when winners will be revealed, will be held on November 7 at Baskerville House, in Birmingham city centre.

One of Birmingham’s landmark buildings, it has recently been renovated in a multi-million-pound programme and prior to it being occupied, the developers have handed over the top floor of the building for the awards.

There will also be a New York theme, with part of Baskerville House transformed into ‘Central Park’.

The awards will be hosted by Andrew Pierce, assistant editor of The Daily Telegraph.
