Grey Matters matters

An innovative monthly column dedicated to senior members of the community has won a national award.

Grey Matters appears in the Lynn News, a twice-weekly newspaper in Norfolk.

It was voted “best editorial idea” in a competition run by the paper’s owners, Johnston Press.

It beat almost 200 other papers in England and Scotland to scoop the title.

The column, written by Malcolm Scott, focuses on stories concerning residents of the local community who are in their retirement years.

It has forged a strong partnership with the Age Concern and Help the Aged and also voices opinions on important subjects such as the Government’s controversial pension increases.

Lynn News editor Malcolm Powell said: “We have been striving in the past year to give the older generation a voice, and it is good that this has been recognised.

“It is a tribute to the writer, a former editor, whose knowledge of bygone years and enthusiasm to search out those doing new things in their later years, has made it an excellent column.

“Its ‘Nifty Somethings’ section highlights the elderly people still making a mark in the community.

“Malcolm strives to inform people that a lot of the retired are still very active in mind and body.”

Mr Powell and Mr Scott were presented with a plaque and some Champagne.
