BT Press and Broadcast Awards

BT North West News/Current Affairs Programme of the Year

Winner: North West Tonight, BBC North

What the judges said: “The consistently high quality of presentation and production are strong features of North West Tonight which is committed to the very highest standards of broadcast journalism. Although its award entry spliced together three extracts from separate programmes – the European cup final, the Rochdale shootings and the Hillsborough memorial service – it could just as easily have submitted almost any one of its nightly productions and still appeared just as effective, such is its all-round strength.”

Highly Commended: ‘Auschwitz – The Forgotten Witness’, Close up North

What the judges said: “This programme investigated the little known fact that several hundred British POWs were first-hand witnesses to the Nazis’ final solution at Auschwitz. It followed one survivor, who had been in the camp for 14 months, as he returned to Poland to confront the nightmares that have haunted him for more than 50 years”

Highly Commended: ‘Shanks for the Memories’, Radio City 96.7

What the judges said: “Bill Shankly would have been happy, and a trifle amused, to have heard the tribute programme to him made 40 years after his arrival at Liverpool football club and 15 years after his death. After it had been broadcast, the documentary, narrated by Ian St John, was made into a CD. It sold out within three days of going on sale.”
