Banks's photo awards winners

More than 100 photographers were whittled down to ten top prizewinners at the Banks’s Midlands Press Photographer of the Year ceremony.

The event, in its sixth year, attracted entries from more than 30 newspapers.

Every aspect of local press photography is recognised – from news and features to sports and community.

Two new categories included the Best Freelance Photographer and a Local Hero Award, for the entry that best demonstrated the essence of the local paper.

Alan Evans, of the Shropshire Star, was named Press Photographer of the Year, and won a £1,000 prize.

  • Part of Alan’s winning portfolio
  • Mike Inman, of the Derby Telegraph, won the Features Photographer class, while Jessica Homer, of the Gloucestershire Echo, was Young Photographer of the Year.

  • One of Mike Inman’s images
  • Allan Williamson, of the Lichfield Mercury, won the Local Hero Award and also lifted the prize for Best Community Picture.

The judges, who comprised Martin Keene, of the Press Association, Dave Webb of North News, and Adrian Wills, Banks’s marketing manager, made the decisions that handed out a total £3,850 in prize money.

All the winners were presented with a certificate and engraved tankard at the ceremony at Walsall’s New Art Gallery.
