Westminster terror attack: How regional press covered tragedy

Newspapers across the country led this morning on yesterday’s terrorist attack at the Houses of Parliament.

Three regional dailies featured an image of police officer Keith Palmer, who was stabbed to death, on their front pages.

The Eastern Daily Press gave particular focus in paying tribute to PC Palmer, describing him as “a father, a husband, a police officer, a hero” on a front page largely dedicated to his memory.

PC Palmer’s face also appeared on the front page of both the Manchester Evening News and Yorkshire Post.

At least 16 regional newspapers have splashed on the attack today, with many opting for an image of police officers standing officers standing over the subdued suspect.

However, the Bournemouth Echo ran an image of Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood, who attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on PC Palmer, surrounded by others trying to save the policeman’s life.

The Cambridge News issued a message of solidarity with the capital, printing the headline ‘London, we stand united with you’.

The News also went with a black and white front page.

The Birmingham Mail focused on a group of schoolchildren from its patch, who had been on a school trip to London and posed for a photograph on Westminster Bridge, just minutes before the attacker drove a car along the pavement over the Thames crossing, killing two and injuring dozens.

A gallery of regional press front pages covering the tragedy will be available on HTFP’s official Twitter account shortly, which can be viewed here.
