Tulip wrapped in police tape adorns daily’s ‘reflective’ front

A tulip wrapped in police tape adorned the front page of a city daily as it reflected on the Westminster terror attack.

The Yorkshire Evening Post also carried a quote from the sister of MP Jo Cox, who died at the hands of a terrorist last year, on its front on Friday.

The Leeds-based newspaper carried special reports following the tragedy, which claimed the lives of four innocent people – including police officer Keith Palmer, on pages two to five.

The YEP was among more than 20 regional newspapers which also splashed on the attack on Thursday.

Discussing Friday’s front page, editor Hannah Thaxter told HTFP: “The Yorkshire Evening Post website carried this image as its picture of the day, so I had been looking at it on and off all day and it was a simple but powerful photograph.

“Whilst Thursday’s coverage was very much following the dramatic news events and how they unfolded. On Thursday there had been time for the news to sink in and I was keen to move the story on to have a more reflective feel.

“We had already read [Jo Cox’s widow] Brendan Cox’s comments and our own Bishop of Leeds had written a comment piece as he was in Westminster as part of a regular duty to lead prayers.

“We also spoke to Jo Cox’s sister who sent a powerful statement from her and her parents which reflected how their family felt after Jo’s murder and encapsulated how they had reacted as a family, which was so much in the spirit of all that Jo had stood for when she’d said we have more in common than what divides us.

“The image of the tulip and the police tape seemed to sum up the mood following the horrific attack outside Westminster on Wednesday with the juxtaposition of the police tape and the single, beautiful flower.”
