Two Yorkshire sister titles will go head-to-head in a bid to be named the best regional newspaper in the 2013 Newspaper Awards.

The Yorkshire Post and the Yorkshire Evening Post will compete against each other and five other titles in the regional newspaper of the year category for papers with a circulation of more than 25,000.

The other titles competing are the Express & Star, Hull Daily Mail, The Irish News, the London Evening Standard and Portsmouth’s The News.

In the under 25,000 circulation category, the seven titles who will bid for the award are the Cambridge News, Carlisle-based News & Star, Dorset Echo, Grimsby Telegraph, Ipswich Star, Oldham Evening Chronicle and the North West Evening Mail.

The awards aim to reward excellence in news media production and will be held on 24 April in London.

In the weekly newspaper of the year award, seven titles have been shortlisted and these are The Cumberland News, Cumberland & Westmorland Herald, Hampshire Chronicle, Kent Messenger, The Scarborough News, West Sussex Gazette and The Wokingham Times.

And a website launched last October by former Express and Echo editor Marc Astley, The Exeter Daily, has been shortlisted in the digital news service of the year award against a number of national titles including the Guardian, Metro and Sunday Times.

Also shortlisted in the digital category is the Belfast Telegraph and the Kentishtowner hyperlocal website.

Last year, the Ipswich Star was named best regional newspaper in the under 25,000 category, while The Irish News won the over 25,000 category.
