Daily drops paywall to mark regional sporting final

A daily newspaper dropped its online paywall for the weekend to mark a regional sporting event.

The Irish News made all of its web content free to read in honour of Gaelic football’s Ulster Senior Football Championship final between Armagh and Donegal.

The ‘all access weekend’ entitled readers to news, business, sport, culture and entertainment coverage.

In exchange, they had to register an account with the Belfast-based News.

Announcing the move on Friday (9), a News editorial said: “To celebrate the Ulster Senior Football Championship final between Armagh and Donegal, we are giving readers free access to all Irish News journalism this weekend.

“We hope you enjoy our ‘all access weekend’ and the depth and breadth of the journalism our editorial team produces seven days a week, across news, business, sport, culture and entertainment.

“To read as many articles as you wish to this weekend you must create a free account with us.

“Subscribers always have unlimited access to our journalism, along with the digital edition of the newspaper, crosswords and puzzles, exclusive newsletters and early access to special features.”
