Weekly’s mural celebrates photographer’s 50 years of service

A weekly newspaper has honoured a long-serving photographer with a mural to mark half a century of service.

The Peterborough Telegraph has worked with artist Nathan Murdoch, of Street Art Hire Ltd, to create the mural of David Lowndes.

The creation of the artwork comes after David, pictured, with his likeness, celebrated 50 years with the Telegraph in 2023.

Last year, he postponed his planned retirement from the paper as he wanted to continue working while “fit enough”.

The new artwork was created over the festive period and is visible to all on the disused toilet block on the corner of Eastfield Road, in Peterborough.

The starry background is a nod to David’s keen interest in astrophotography.

David told the Telegraph: “I started as a dark room boy on the Telegraph in 1973. I did six months in the dark room before they gave me a camera and I haven’t stopped since.”

Of the mural, he added: “It’s absolutely fantastic, he’s caught the moment perfectly. It really is humbling to see.”

Mr Murdoch said: “Fifty years really is something that should be celebrated and I’ve always said that we should do more to celebrate local people.

“I’ve got to know Lowndsey in recent years through the media, always cracks me up with his sometimes direct way with words.”
